How to stay safe online

Here are nine common sense core things to do:

  1. Use only strong (long) passwords
  2. Use different passwords for each website
  3. Use at least one password manager
  4. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever available
  5. Spend a bit of money for identity theft protection – we like Lifelock, Aura, IdentityGuard, or IdentityForce
  6. Use disk or drive encryption whenever available
  7. Keep operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, Apple IOS, Google Android) and apps updated – updates fix bugs!
  8. Be wary of phishing and other email scams (keep “preview pane” off – even opening one can infect!)
  9. Freeze your credit at the “Big 3” firms: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union
